Dog Health – Separation Anxiety

April20061151 300x200 Dog Health Separation AnxietyAs you start gathering your items to go, does your dog start whining, running in circles, jumping on the furniture and even tries to beat you out of the door.  These are the signs of dog separation anxiety.  Just like when we were children, we did not like being left behind and neither does your pet.

Separation anxiety generates uncontrollable stress in your dog.  The stress in your dog can be so extreme, that it can cause him to become destructive.  Tearing up the furniture, chewing on your favorite shoes or even going to the bathroom on the floor.  Keep in mind that this behavior is not to get back at you but is a panic response to a frightening situation (from your dogs point of view).

There are some simple techniques to try before spending a lot of money on a professional dog behaviorist.

1. Do not make a big production of your departures or arrivals.  Acknowledge him when you first come in but wait a few minutes before you enthusiastically great him.

2. When leaving be sure to leave articles of clothing (Old T-Shirt) that will contain your scent.

3. Remember to leave plenty of his favorite toys and chew treats.

4. Consider restricting his access to a small safe room, his “safe place”.

5. You may try leaving your dirty laundry near the safe room so that your scent will be prevalent.

These methods are worth a try, but if they do not succeed you will need to try the more expensive professional dog behaviorist.  Remember that this condition is treatable and in most cases with the proper instruction you can Resolve It Yourself.  Be patient, consistent and persistent in your technique.   You can gain a loving and trusting relationship with you dog.
